Issue 42 Cover Note

Rebecca Chamberlain
Homatorium Series, Aalto, Public-Private
Lithography ink on fabric wrapped board
5×10 inches – 2 panels 5×3, 5x7inches

Drawing from early Modernist architecture and abstraction from the interwar period and its embodiment of humanist ideals, Rebecca Chamberlain’s works are meditations on dwelling and being. Her monochromatic paintings utilize photographs (her own and archival) plus additional materials such as ballpoint and lithography inks, lead crystal, and vintage architectural tracing cloth. These reconstructions focus on transitional spaces—windows, hallways, promising staircases or empty rooms. Such slivers of space function as interstitial moments, experimenting with reflection, synchronicity, and fragmentation, thereby challenging the viewer’s sense of perspective.
